Leap for Literacy’s Read-N-Roll™ outreach program, founded by Stan Tucker, delivers books to the kids who need them the most in Title I Elementary Schools with at least 70% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Stan-The-Man rolls up to these schools in his sweet Read-N-Roll™ bus ready to pass out new books!
What is truly unique about this program is that kindness is the currency. It was designed for students to perform at least one act of kindness each day in order to step onto the Read-N-Roll™ and choose a book to keep forever! Students record their daily acts of kindness on Kindness Tickets and submit them to their classroom Kindness Box to share with Stan-the-Man and their classroom teachers. This program promotes positive prosocial behavior but removes the financial barrier that prevents at-risk children from acquiring books.
When schools shut down due to Covid-19 in 2020, Stan was no longer able to operate the Read-N-Roll™ program for an in-person experience. Furthermore, he had been wanting to scale his program into a digital platform in order to impact more underserved communities across the country. An exciting opportunity came when he learned about a significant grant program for qualifying nonprofits.
AppBarry’s Solutions and UX Design Team became fast friends and supporters of Stan’s mission to help him flesh out his ideas into a clickable prototype. He submitted the prototype along with his application to the grant program, which helped him win consideration for a sizable amount of funding to scale his platform with a responsive web app that will help Leap for Literacy continue to have a remarkable impact in many more communities!
